What is Spyware?
Spyware is software that infiltrates your computer in the same way as a virus does, however once inside it begins to send out your private information to illegal organisations all over the internet. Spyware can be downloaded from various sources, the most common being dodgey websites and unsolicited emails.
Once infected it can be difficult to completely get rid of the spyware with it reinstalling itself everytime it is uninstalled.
What is a Virus?
Like Spyware, a Virus is usually downloaded from dodgey websites and junk emails. However the goal of a virus is not usually to send information, but merely to spread and infect as many people as possible.
Virus’s are also extremely difficult to get rid of, often leaving several traces of itself on the harddrive.
What can I do if I’ve been infected?
If you suspect you have been infected with either spyware or a virus there are several things you need to do.
- Disconnect your computer from the Internet. This means physically pulling out the network or USB cable that connects you to the router. If you have wireless turn it off or switch of your router.
- Back up anything of importance. Files, Images, anything that needs to be backed up. Put it onto a flash drive, external harddrive, or burn them onto dvds. DO NOT insert these backups into another computer incase the virus has also contaminated them.
